You’ve got Enron mail
I have an arsenal of podcasts that are my default when I'm cooking, driving (ugh), or can't sleep at night. The best of the best from this week wasn't a new episode. 99% Invisible replayed a gem that I hadn't heard before. You've Got Enron Mail.
Enron collapsed because of greed and corruption and fraud. But the emails Enron employees sent and received have had an astounding afterlife. They were used to create Siri and develop spam filtering and artificial intelligence. They’ve helped us understand gender and power. What happens when so much of our technology is based on the writings of some fallen energy tycoons? And should the emails have been released in the first place?
My book has a title 🎉
If you haven't heard, I'm writing a book. It's about my journey as a female tech founder. I've been writing since May with no title - until a few weeks ago. I didn't get to the title in the most elegant way possible, but I got there. Here's the story.
Productivity hack: Tomato Timer
I was introduced to 🍅⏲️Tomato Timer by one of my author friends. I hadn't heard of it, but I liked the fact that it had a cool name and was simple to understand.
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method created by Francesco Cirillo. He wanted a more productive way to work and study. Here's how it works:
Decide on a task.
Set the Tomato Timer to 25 minutes.
Work on the task until the timer expires.
Take a Short Break (5 minutes).
Every four Pomodoros, take a Long Break (10 minutes).
I love this technique. I use it to focus on my writing, burn through emails, and power through household chores (breaking down boxes is THE WORST).
Wanna give it a try? Here's the site I use to set my timers: https://tomato-timer.com/
Meet Bhavini Patel, Founder & CEO of Be The Change
Every issue of Chirps will introduce you to an amazing Female Founder.
This week, we'd like to introduce you to Bhavini Patel, CEO & Co-Founder of beamdata, a civic tech company that operates at the intersection of social issues and data.
In August, Bhavini and her team launched Be the Change, a non-partisan participatory civic action app that helps people provide feedback on legislative issues and mobilize around Community Causes. Download it today.
Bhavini is currently looking for intros to advisors working in civic tech or government lobbying and communications. She's also always up for meeting new people, so feel free to drop her an email and say hello: info@beam-data.com
Crewmate or Imposter?!?
My kid keeps me hip. Most recently, he introduced me to AMONG US, an online multiplayer social deduction game that takes place in a space-themed setting in which players take on one of two roles - crewmate or impostor!
I've def had more fun playing AMONG US with him than Roblox, but nothing beats Mario Kart on the Nintendo Switch.
If you’re seeing Chirps for the first time, you can read previous editions and subscribe here.
Until next time ✌️
