How to Migrate from Ghost to Substack
A how-to guide on moving your newsletter from Ghost to Substack, based on the fastest way I could figure out how to do this!
Another weekend, another project. This one was brought upon by my desire to launch a second newsletter in the next few weeks. Since I was starting fresh with one, I figured I’d revisit my choice to use Ghost as my blogging / newsletter platform.
A few reasons why I’m moving to Substack:
I want something easier. While Ghost is great, it does require some knowledge of code. And I was sick of writing code.
Substack drives traffic. In the first few days I’ve had the blog live, I’ve had 12 new people subscribe — driven from Substack. You just don’t get this with Ghost.
I really want to try some of the features that Substack offers that Ghost doesn’t offer. Polls, Podcast,
OK, on to the guide.
Importing Posts into Substack
The easiest way to move all of your content from any platform to Substack is by using their Import feature, which can be found on your Writer’s Dashboard.
The only problem with this with Ghost. Substack can only pull your 15 most recent posts. If you have more than that, this is the hack for you.
I did all of the usual things trying to figure out if there was a faster, more efficient way to do this.
I searched Google, read the Substack resources on importing, checked YouTube for a video. Nothing. I couldn’t find a good answer anywhere.
After my searching failed, I figured I would attempt to do this using Zapier, since they have an RSS option. Nope. Couldn’t get it to work.
Then it dawned on me. There was a common sense solution for this.
If Substack grabs the 15 most recent, all I have to do is unpublish posts on Ghost to push the others to the top!
So I popped on over to Ghost and started to Unpublish 15 posts at a time, which took almost no time at all compared to the time I would’ve had to put in if I had given up and done it manually.
After unpublishing 15, I went back into Substack and used the Import feature again. And yep, it pulled the next 15 in.
Within 30 minutes, two years of blog posts were live on Substack.
